Student loans by National Bank of Pakistan

Student loans are always a good way to fully or partly finance your education.

National Bank of Pakistan is offering interest free student loans to all students of Pakistan (Qarz e Hasna) The loan covers the actual tuition fee, living expenses and cost of books. It is available both at the bachelors level and at the MS level as well.

The repayment of loan starts once you graduate and get a job or one year after graduation. You just pay back the principle amount and no interest. You have to pay back the loan in 10 years which makes it really easy to pay it back.

Lets take an example. Let us say you want to study BBA. It is a four year program with average and typical tuition fee of Rs 60,000 per semester. So in four years you ll take a loan of 60,000 X 8 = Rs 4,80,000/- for payment of tuition fee and around Rs 8000 per month as living expenses which comes to around Rs 400,000. So the total loan would be around Rs 900,000. You have to pay this back in 10 years so your monthly installment would be Rs 8000 per month which you can easily afford after getting a job.

The NBP student loan is available in the following areas of studies.

Engineering, Electronics, Oil Gas & Petro-Chemical  Technology, Agriculture, Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Mathematics, Other Natural Science, Dawa and Islamic Jurisprudence , (LL.B/LL.M Sharia) , Computer Science/Information, System and Technology including hardware ,Economics, Statistics and Econometric, Business Management Science, Commerce

You need to have secured 70% marks in your last examination to be eligible for this loan.

      Dear Nayab,

As per your CGPA you are definitely eligible for a student loan. The other condition is that you should be a student of a public sector university. I have checked and DOW university of health sciences is listed as a public sector university on the HEC website. Therefore you can directly apply for a student loan.

      Just go to this link

      http://www.nbp.com.pk/studentloan/

and download the PDF application form. Fill it and submit it directly to the bank branch nearest to your location. You would need signature from your university admin on these forms.

Thanku soo much for rplying, i’ll apply asap. One more thing to ask is there any sort of lucky draw or they just grant us loan?

        • jehanzeb_ahmad

          Dear Nayab,
There is no lucky draw. Decision is need and merit based. Most students do get approved for these loans based on my experience. The actual loan amount might be less than what you ask for.
Don’t worry about the session year 2012. I think they haven’t updated the forms. The same form should be ok for 2013 / 2014.
          regards

i did visited their website but i am still not clear, how to apply and i do not want to take the coaching class then when and how should i apply?

      • jehanzeb_ahmad

        Dear Rehmatullah,
Are you doing FSc right now?, if yes then check if your college is in the approved list of ICT fund. Its available on their website in PDF format.
If you school or college is in the approved list then you ll have to apply and there will be a test. If you clear that test, then you ll get full scholarship for four years for undertaking your studies in an ICT related discipline.

  • Hasan Urfi

Is it possible can an overseas international student can apply for this loan? i need almost 6 lacs for a semester.. i need it only for one time not for every semester

    • jehanzeb_ahmad

      Dear Hasan
Unfortunately these loans are for studies within Pakistan in specific disciplines and not for overseas students.
If you are doing a PhD abroad then you can get a one time grant of US$ 15000 from HEC to complete your PhD. since its a grant you dont have to return it either!!, but as such no loans. You will be better off trying to get a loan from a bank in the country where you are currently residing.
